Heart of Rode appeal The church's place is at the heart of the village. Rural churches are a vital focus for the identity of so many communities. The church has acted as a reminder to people of their dependence on each other, their calling to live generously with one another and as a focus of our shared identity. We all benefit from a church that is able to fulfil its role within the village community. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, said recently of rural churches that they are helping "keep the circulation going in the community's body." But good circulation demands a strong and vibrant heart. This is why the Heart of Rode appeal is being launched, to empower St. Lawrence's to play its full and active role in the village of Rode. We have to raise much needed and substantial funds to update the facilities of our village church. Our Village Church St. Lawrence's Church has served as the community heart for over 500 years. Over these centuries the people of Rode have been able to turn to the church in moments of need, marking the joy of new life, the love of a couple getting married or sharing the grief of loved ones in death. It is a place for all within the village to reflect, worship, socialize and enjoy. St. Lawrence's has given to the community throughout every season. Now St. Lawrence's needs the community's help to equip the church for the 21st century. The Aim The aim is to bring to life a significant space within the church that will vastly improve the flexibility of St. Lawrence's as a useful building for the community. The Parochial Church Council has gained the approval of the Diocesan Advisory Committee (on which English Heritage is represented) to refurbish the north east corner of the church. The existing pine screens will be glazed to contain a separate independently heated meeting room. The interior space will be organised to create a loo, kitchen sink and work surface where drinks and light refreshments can be prepared.
The Cost The Heart of Rode appeal needs to raise £35,000 in 2010. The building work (with professional fees and fitting out) will cost a total of £60, 000. St Lawrence's is using its own reserves. But we are left with a sum of £35,000 to be raised in 2010. It's a formidable sum and that is why everyone's generous support is vital. How can you help? First, we need your donations ... either a lump sum or a pledge over a year, Gift Aided, so that the government gives us the tax you pay. It's simple ... for every £100 you give, the government will give us an additional £25 ... it makes a huge difference. Second, your help in fund raising. If you can have some time or a specialist skill that can help with the fund raising activities, please do let us know. Call Revd Philip Hawthorn on 01373 831234 Ways of Giving There are three ways you can help: 1 Come to the Giving Day in the church on February 14th 2 Or you can send your donation by post using the enclosed addressed envelope or hand it in at Rode Post Office Please complete the enclosed Gift Aid declaration form and enclose your cheque made payable to: Hardington Vale PCC - St. Lawrence's Appeal.
