Nigel Done ImagesA New Day I was recently commissioned to produce a painting for Back to Church Sunday. This is a national campaign helping churches to do the simple task of encouraging the congregation to say to friends and neighbours ‘why don’t you come along to church with me this Sunday?’ The brief used the story in John 2 describing Andrew meeting Jesus, spending the day with him and then either later that evening or early the following day returned to Jesus with his brother Simon. It’s in this encounter that Simon is given the new name Peter. I like putting these little stories into a painting, hopefully in a way that brings out some of the emotion of what is going on. And of course dogs are so useful at giving expression to this. I hope that anyone receiving this picture on an invitation to go to church will be reassured that Jesus is not standing over them judging, but engaging in a way in which they are already comfortable. This encounter has all the potential of a whole New Day.
